This episode was pretty clutch. The tripping scenes reminded me of the late 80s Nightmare on Elm Street movies, all neon lights and weird angles.

Tumblin’ from a Delaware McDonald’s

For the past week, and for the next two weeks, I’m traveling with the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research. I drive the car following behind two cyclists as we go from New York City down to Atlanta (where we started), all the while stopping at hospitals and fundraisers.

We get to pose with giant checks and give grants to doctors who are conducting research to treat things like brain tumors (mostly brain tumors thus far), as well as meeting with patients, their families and other hospital staff who see the results of those treatments.

So that’s what I’ve been up to since graduation. You can follow us on TwitterFacebook, flickr and our blog.

The continuing adventures of the Obama bumper sticker that was on my car for a time

Yesterday was my sister’s graduation party. About half an hour in, I find myself talking to my neighbor. Here’s a guy I’ve had minimal interaction with. I’m not even 100% which neighbor this was, but I know he lives on the same cul-de-sac.

He asks if my car is the one with the Obama sticker, and I say it is. He responds: “Yeah, I can tell you grew up rich if you’re voting for him.”

He said later that he was only kidding but to hell with that. Even if I did know this guy well, I don’t think anybody has the right to say something as shitty as “You grew up rich,” whether we’re talking about my political choices or my expecting a butler to come wipe me after I take a shit. And not that it matters, but I didn’t grow up rich. But it doesn’t matter, and it takes a lot of nerve to say something so shitty to someone, particularly when the candidate that he says is an idiot didn’t grow up rich, and the candidate that he prefers did.

On top of that, another neighbor saw the sticker over winter break and asked my mom if she was letting her sons vote for Obama. She told him she wasn’t ‘letting us’ vote for anyone because “fuck yeah, my mom is cool.”

I peeled off the sticker today and won’t be replacing it. I suppose I was inviting this kind of bullshit by wearing my politics on my car, but I still think it’s ridiculous that something as innocuous as an Obama 2012 sticker attracted so much hate. I shouldn’t have to defend myself over this, nor should my parents who aren’t even voting for the guy.

And that is why, when you are all out there in the world and you meet someone and you tell them that you’re from Virginia Tech, and they say, “Huh, isn’t that the school where” — I want you to interrupt them right there and say, “Yes, it is the school where we have some of the best academic programs and professors in the country.” That’s what you tell them. You tell them, “Yes, it is the school where students are passionate about serving their country and supporting each other. And by the way, which also has the best campus food you’ll ever eat.” Who can say that?

You tell them “Yes, It’s the school where we produce graduates who are leaders in their industries, and pillars in their communities, and who carry their Hokie pride with them every day for the rest of their lives.” You say, “Yes, that is the school I attend. That is Virginia Tech.”

I was there! She was great, as was Mark Warner, and people were eating nachos because it was in the stadium and people wanted to eat nachos during graduation, dammit.
